Mike

I don't know if CIP is still reading Dark Sun, but I thought this video of the Ivy Mike shot might be interesting:
It shows only the first milliseconds and therefore not the usual mushroom cloud.
Early on one can see lightning triggered by the explosion.
The bright dots are actually vaporized pieces of the 80t cooling device.
The size of the fireball at the end of the video is approximately 5km.

added later: Some more information about the first milliseconds of nuclear explosions and a picture of Teller light.

I think it is good that people are worried about nuclear war again...
Btw some estimates of the likelihood of nuclear war.

According to wikipedia: "After one to six months, the fission products from even a large-yield thermonuclear weapon decay to levels tolerable by humans."
In other words, human being in well equipped nuclear shelters have a reasonable chance to survive a nuclear war:
Complete extinction of our species is unlikely - the top politicians and generals will probably survive.

If one wants to know how the US politicians plan to survive, there is a book about that.

And there's a reasonable chance they will get to experience the happiness of H-G societies when they come out.

The Russians exploded a 50 megaton device dropped from a bomber and I think the crew survived. They could have made it 100 megatons but were worried about fallout. I'm pretty sure there's film of it on youtube. The U.S. had already decided that multiple smaller devices were more destructive. I've always enjoyed watching the end of Dr. Strangelove.
